While eye exams take a look at the front of the eye to evaluate health and prescription changes, a thorough screening of the retina is critical to verify that your eye is healthy. Regular monitoring of the back of the eye (retina) can lead to early detection of diseases such as glaucoma, diabetes, macular degeneration, and even cancer. The sensitive tissue of the retina is susceptible to a variety of diseases, which if left untreated may cause blindness.

At this time vision savings plans and medical insurance benefits do not cover these screening tests. Because of the valuable information on the health of your eyes Dr. Potter obtains with the OCT and Optomap, Dr. Potter recommends that these tests be performed and offers them to you at a discounted rate when performed during your eye health and vision consultation. When reviewing the results with Dr. Potter, patients are amazed at the amount of detail of the retina they can see for themselves!

OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography)Testing

OCT uses light waves to take cross-section pictures of your retina, rather like an MRI of the eye. This gives Dr. Potter a 3D image of the retina’s distinctive layers and allows him to map and measure their thickness. These measurements help with diagnosis of eye diseases and also provide treatment guidance for already diagnosed diseases. Glaucoma and diseases of the retina including macular degeneration and diabetic eye disease are some of the most familiar diseases found with the OCT, and if left untreated may cause blindness.

Patients age 40 and over, especially those with a family history of macular degeneration, glaucoma or other retina diseases are at increased risk for vision threatening diseases. Completely non-invasive and painless, the OCT screening scan takes just a minute or two. Dr. Potter will review the test results with you during your exam.

OCT testing alone: $35.00                      (Optomap testing alone: $35.00)

Optomap

The Optomap produces a single, high resolution, ultra-widefield (200 degree) image of the retina and is performed through an undilated pupil. This testing can provide information used in the early detection of eye diseases, such as glaucoma, diabetes and macular degeneration. The image is kept on file and may be compared to subsequent testing to determine any changes in the retina. The Optomap was developed by the father of a 5 year old who became blind in one eye due to an undiagnosed retinal detachment, even though routine eye exam were being performed regularly.

Patients of any age, from an infant, who can be held up to the instrument, through senior citizens are able to take advantage of the benefits of the Optomap testing. Performed at the beginning of your eye health exam and vision consultation, this completely painless and non-invasive test is performed very quickly. Eyes are tested separately, the images are immediately transferred to Dr. Potter for interpretation and the results will be reviewed with you the same visit. Unless a problem is identified, the Optomap replaces the dilation portion of your appointment, saving you time as well as giving you a more thorough exam.
